Rain washes RCB vs KKR match; Defending champions knocked out of playoff race

Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders were knocked out of contention for a playoff berth as the Indian Premier League 2025 resumed with a washout in Bengaluru. The forecast did predict rain on game day, and it never really relented right from the time it arrived, more than an hour before the toss.

The game was widely anticipated on multiple fronts. After the league's abrupt suspension on May 8, this game was earmarked for resumption. This was also RCB's first game after Virat Kohli's Test retirement, and plenty of fans were expected to pay their tributes at the stadium to the global superstar.

For KKR, this was a must-win game considering they were placed sixth, with just two games left to play before this match. With only a solitary point following the washout, the three-time champions now have 12 points from 13 games. RCB now go top of the table, having collected one point, taking their tally to 17 from 12 games. They now have a home game next on May 23 against Sunrisers Hyderabad before travelling to Lucknow to face the home team in their final league fixture.

Primed for a playoff spot, RCB might secure their place in the final four before even playing their next game, as they will go through if Punjab Kings or Delhi Capitals lose tomorrow. While PBKS face Rajasthan Royals in an afternoon fixture in Jaipur, DC will take on Gujarat Titans in the evening at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
